Joyce Sylvia Bondietti
October 23, 1932 - January 25, 2026
Joyce Sylvia (Lundholm) Bondietti passed away peacefully on January 25th, 2026, in Astoria, Oregon, at Columbia Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She passed shortly after her beloved Seahawks won the NFC Championship, allowing her to root for them one last time.
She was born on October 23rd, 1932, to Edward and Sylvia Lundholm in Astoria. She graduated from Astoria High School and soon met Carl Bondietti. They married in 1951 and had two children, Carl ("Butch") Bondietti and Dena (Bondietti) Marsch. Aside from being a mother to Butch and Dena, Joyce faithfully supported her husband in his various roles in law enforcement. Carl served as Clatsop County Sheriff from 1959 to 1983 with Joyce by his side.
After Carl retired, they moved to Ocean Park, WA, and focused on traveling and being grandparents. They went all over the world but always loved coming back home. Carl preceded Joyce in death in 2002, after which she moved back to her hometown of Astoria.
A pillar of the Astoria community, Joyce came from a family of cannery workers and gillnetters, and worked in the Union Fisherman Cannery as a young woman. She worked hard to preserve Astoria's unique and beautiful history by being heavily involved with the Columbia Maritime Museum, Clatsop County Historical Society, Fort Stevens, and more. She was also passionate about ensuring her fellow Astorians were cared for by volunteering with Astoria Senior Center and local food kitchens.
Joyce was proud of her Finnish heritage and full of "sisu" until the end. She passed that down to the generations that followed and loved her. Joyce loved being a grandma who made grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, baked cookies and Chex Mix, took trips to the beach or around the Pacific Northwest, played the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" Christmas song - no matter what the time of year - and was generous with stories and advice. She enjoyed spending time with family, friends, rooting for the Seahawks and Mariners, and watching ships on the Columbia.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Sylvia, her husband of over 50 years, Carl, and her daughter, Dena.
She is survived by her son, Butch Bondietti, brother Jerry Lundholm, and many extended family members. Her "sisu" also lives on in grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren!
In her will, she bequeathed funds to the following scholarships at Astoria High School: The Carl B. Bondietti scholarship for students wanting to pursue a career in law enforcement, continuing the work of supporting her husband's legacy. As well as the Dena Bondietti Marsch scholarship fund, founded in memory of Dena and the immeasurable impact she left as a teacher and coach at Astoria High School for 28 years. This speaks to her continued wish to care for the community that she loved.
At her request, there will be no service. If you wish, please donate to the aforementioned organizations that Joyce championed and volunteered with, or to the scholarships at Astoria High School.
Hyvää matkaa, Mom/Grandma/GGma/Joyce. We love you!

Plant a tree: How does it work
When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.
An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.
After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.
Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.
