John Richard Dagostino Jr., a man of unwavering courage and infectious humor, passed away at the age of 72 in Las Vegas on July 28, 2025, due to congestive heart failure. Born on January 12, 1953, in the vibrant city of San Francisco, John's adventurous spirit and dedication to service were evident from an early age.
John's life was one of commitment and passion, both in his personal and professional endeavors. He was a beloved husband to Leilani Kimmel-Dagostino, with whom he shared the most profound love and companionship. His brothers, Martin, Ronald, Edwin, and Joseph Dagostino, stood by his side throughout his life's journey, sharing in his triumphs and offering support during challenging times.
A proud alumnus of Vanguard University in Santa Ana, John delved deeply into the world of political science, a field that would later inform his understanding of the world and contribute to his role in public service. His academic pursuits laid a strong foundation for his impressive career, which was marked by a profound sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to his country.
John's career was as diverse as it was distinguished. He served as a Supervisor at US Customs and Border Protection at the Port of Long Beach, where his leadership and expertise were highly regarded. His dedication to safeguarding the nation was further exemplified in his military service. As a Helicopter Captain in the United States Marine Corps and later as a Lt Commander Search and Rescue Helicopter Pilot in the United States Coast Guard, John exemplified bravery and skill. His 23 years of service as a retired veteran were a testament to his valor and patriotic spirit, earning him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
A devout Christian, John's faith was a guiding light in his life, providing him with strength and solace. He lived his beliefs through his actions, always striving to embody the principles of kindness and compassion that are at the heart of his religion.
John's zest for life extended beyond his professional achievements. He was an avid practitioner of Aikido and Jiu-Jitsu, disciplines that not only kept him physically fit but also reflected his love for challenge and personal growth. These martial arts, much like his approach to life, required patience, discipline, and a strategic mind.
Those who knew John would describe him as the epitome of funny, courageous, and adventurous. His ability to light up a room with his humor, face challenges head-on with his courage, and seek out new experiences with his adventurous spirit will be dearly missed.

Plant a tree: How does it work
When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.
An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.
After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.
Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

January - May
Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.
June - December
Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
